Reclaiming

Reclaiming It’s not often that you’re handed someone’s house and property with carte blanche permission to do whatever you want to turn it into a home. I’m in that lucky position. Now, true, I don’t right now have a budget. Or, more accurately, I don’t know what the budget is. But suffice it to say, I think the budget will be more than I’ve ever had to work with in my own home in the past. I think there is some leeway budget-wise to make things happen. I should say that I am not a big spender. I’m always looking for deals. I don’t believe in buying brand new if you can get virtually the same thing in good used condition for a fraction of the price. Like at a garage sale or at the Good Will or a place like that. (I should also say that I’ve learned you sometimes have to take the plunge and pay the bucks […]

The Capybara and the law

This post isn’t really about exotic animals per se, although it does involve them. It’s more a digression from the animal theme into something else, just for a bit, because I just feel like talking about it and I can do that because this is my blog. Lol. So, I imported a capybara for a zoo. And when I say I imported it for a zoo, I want to quickly assure you that when it comes to zoos, I’m extremely particular about the kinds of zoos I send animals to. They have to be the kind that replicates an animal’s natural habitat. I am never going to send an animal to one of those horrors that call itself a zoo but really is just a cruel and inhumane collection of cages. Forget that. Those places piss me off. No, I will only import animals to places where they will have lots of the kind of space they need. Back to […]

loose change

Loose change. We all have it. We all deal with it. We all wonder what the heck to do with it. A long time ago I got a mammoth glass jar—the kind that you think of when someone says “moonshine.” Clear, handled, with a neck. Holds about 50 gallons of hair-growing swill brewed up along a creek at the bottom of a remote Tennessee mountain by men with beards down to their kneecaps, dressed in roomy overalls and blue plaid shirts. Yeah, that kind of jar. I don’t remember where I got it. Certainly not from Tennessee and certainly not full of any hair-growing swill. I kept it in my closet and it served as the repository for all of my loose change. It just stayed there and became a fixture that I never even saw, except when I threw change into it. It took a number of years, but it finally got full. Quarters, nickels, dimes, pennies—they were all […]

All in time

All in Time Continuing on with the subject of reclaiming and turning a blank canvas into a beautiful thing. Or, in this case, a house and property into a home and garden. So, after we started the reclamation project with the bedroom, that established some great momentum. We both saw what could be done. That was probably most helpful for the homeowner, who had lived so long in his crowded, neglected place that he had lost the ability to see it as anything else. Once he saw the change that happened in his bedroom, he got a glimpse of what could happen in the rest of the house. Still, it was overwhelming for him. And almost so for me, except I had the advantage of a fresh pair of eyes, and I lived somewhere else, which meant I wasn’t surrounded by this environment 24/7. The next time I came back we tackled the garage. We had to do that. We […]

about all the awesome stuff

Hey, how’s it going? Welcome to my blog. I’m glad you stopped by and I hope you stay awhile and browse around. Lots of good stuff here to read, especially if you’re interested in exotic animals—which is my business. I’m Marcello and I’ve always been interested in animals and especially in unusual ones. I decided to turn that interest into a vocation, and out of college I started a business importing exotic animals. My degrees are in animal science so it wasn’t a huge leap to go into work with exotics. Somewhere along the line I started this blog as a way to record some of the things that were happening in the context of my business. I thought I had a great domain name: emuwarestore. It looked perfect until I realized I had misspelled emu and it was eru! Dang! But anyway, I didn’t spend time crying about that. It is what it is. So instead of emuwarestore, it’s […]
